Discover Otel: A Tranquil Stay with Dining on Chios Island

For travelers seeking a laid-back retreat on the charming Chios Island, Otel offers a unique blend of rustic stone architecture, sea views, and convenient amenities. Nestled away from the bustling center, this hotel with its own restaurant caters well to guests who appreciate peaceful surroundings and a touch of local island atmosphere. Whether you're planning a restful stopover or a leisurely vacation, Otel presents a casual yet welcoming option for your stay and dining needs on this picturesque Aegean destination.

Location and Setting on Chios Island

Otel is situated on Chios Island, a quaint gem in the Aegean Sea known for its medieval villages, inviting beaches, and historical landmarks such as an 11th-century monastery. The hotel itself is located about a 20-minute walk from Chios Town center, also called Chora, offering guests a quiet environment away from the town’s hustle. While parking in Chios Town can be challenging without a resident pass, Otel provides easy and complimentary parking for its guests, adding to the convenience of your island experience.

Cuisine, Atmosphere, and Service

Otel’s restaurant complements the hotel’s relaxed vibe, providing a comfortable setting for guests to enjoy meals during their stay. The atmosphere across the hotel and dining areas is peaceful, enhanced by the stone buildings and semi-private porches adorned with fruit trees, creating a refreshing and serene environment. Although Otel is primarily a hotel venue, its restaurant serves as a welcoming spot for both guests and visitors to savor local flavors with attentive and friendly service.

The hotel also features a 24/7 bar and a swimming pool, making it easy to unwind at any time of day. The pool area, while a favorite among guests, has raised some concerns due to the proximity of lounge chairs to the water and the occasional absence of a lifeguard. Nevertheless, many guests find it a preferred alternative to the nearby rocky beach, which, while scenic, is a mix of sand, rocks, and sticks rather than a typical sandy shore.

Guest Experiences at Otel

  • Tranquil Ambiance: Guests frequently highlight the hotel's peaceful atmosphere and lovely surroundings. One visitor described the rooms as having "nice semi-private porches with fruit growing outside," which contributed to a refreshing and relaxing stay.
  • Convenient Location: Though a bit farther from the town center than expected, the walk is manageable and preferred over driving due to parking difficulties in Chios Town. The hotel’s complimentary parking is appreciated by those with vehicles.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness Concerns: Some guests noted that the mattresses were thin and uncomfortable, and that certain rooms could benefit from updates to furnishings and cleanliness standards. Specific mentions include unpleasant odors from drains and the need for refreshed linens and towels.
  • Service Notes: While staff are generally described as friendly and helpful, a few guests experienced issues with room keys and limited access to pool towels, particularly when using the nearby beach.
  • Ideal for Short Stays: Several reviews suggest that Otel is particularly suitable for overnight stays or short visits, especially for travelers arriving late or departing early from Chios.

If you value a quiet atmosphere, appreciate walking to the town center, and prefer a hotel that blends rustic charm with modern amenities like wheelchair accessibility, Otel is worth considering. It was pretty and our rooms had nice semi-private porches with fruit growing outside. Overall the atmosphere created a peaceful refreshing atmosphere. It is within walking distance of Chios Town center (Chora) but the port but it was farther than I imagined (it took about 20 minutes to walk). Available parking that did not require a resident pass proved to be difficult in Chios Town. I wonder if there are rental car companies in Chios that rent cars with resident passes. I would recommend walking between the hotel and Chios Town rather than driving. Parking at the hotel was easy and complementary. The biggest thing that bothered us was the mattresses were thin and uncomfortable. But their wasn't much we could do about that for our stay. Investing in new mattresses for the rooms would be wise. It was also more difficult to get multiple room keys that I think it should have been. I think we went to the desk four times before we were successful. They told me their machine was broken. The pool appeared to be closed for our first few days there because it was roped off so we asked the desk and they said that it was safe to go in but their was not a lifeguard on duty and that is why it was roped off. There was a life guard on duty for a day or two out of our five day stay. Also the distance between the lounge chairs and the pool was very small and I could see some people easily slipping and falling into the pool. It is across the street from the beach (Paralia Chiou) but the hotel would not give us extra towels to use there because they were concerned about the bacteria in the water. It made me wonder, if you are concerned about that, is it safe to swim? The internet said it is safe to swim in the Straight of Chios so I didn't understand that. The beach was also more rocky than I had expected (a mix of rocks, sand, and sticks). So we found it more pleasant to be at the pool rather than the beach.

Beautiful old property and the staff is very friendly and helpful. However my room felt unsanitary. The drain smelled horrible (and I am not that sensitive about Mediterranean drain smells), there were stains all over the walls where people had smashed bugs and the drapes/bedspread were old and dirty and definitely need to be replaced. Bed super uncomfortable (most uncomfortable I have ever had in Greece). Good air conditioning.
